The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan that provides buyers at dealerships like the Buttonwillow Volkswagen dealer with an exceptional ride, a spacious interior, and plenty of room in the trunk for storage. Jetta owners appreciate the vehicle’s quiet ride. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine can be linked to an available six-speed manual transmission for those who prefer to row their own gears. The VW Jetta comes with a long list of infotainment and advanced safety features. Buyers looking for an exceptional sedan that checks all the boxes and comes with an economical price tag should put the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta at the top of their shopping list.
The Jetta gets a mid-cycle refresh for 2022 that sees it with an updated exterior design, revised interior styling, new standard and available equipment, and an upgraded engine courtesy of the Volkswagen Taos. According to the Buttonwillow VW dealer, the Jetta’s new engine is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder that now produces 158 horses, compared with the outgoing model’s 1.4-liter turbo-four that was good for 147 hp. A new Sport model starts with the features of the R-Line and adds sporty styling, an electronically locking front differential, and 17-inch wheels. The base S trim picks up some new standard features, including an 8-inch digital gauge cluster, blind-spot monitoring, and emergency braking.
The automotive media is firmly behind the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta. Kelley Blue Book writes:
“The new Jetta has gone to finishing school. This compact VW sedan looks larger and a bit more mainstream, perhaps in an effort to fill the gap created when the Passat leaves the lineup after the 2022 model year. Whatever the case, the new Jetta impresses. ... If you’re looking for a compact sedan that’s sportier than an Audi A3 but more affordable than an S3, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta GLI deserves a look.”
The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta comes in four trim levels: S, Sport, SE and SEL. There’s also a Jetta GLI model, which isn’t covered in this review. Powering the VW Jetta is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. Fuel economy is excellent. The 2022 VW Jetta gets an EPA-estimated rating of up to 31 mpg city/41 mpg highway.*
Standard features for the base 2022 Jetta S trim include 16-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, cloth upholstery with contrast-color stitching, and an 8-inch digital gauge cluster. The infotainment system features a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Car-Net, VW’s App-Connect, and a Wi-Fi hot spot (subscription required).
Advanced safety features that come standard include forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.
As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has yet to test the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta. We expect to see the same results as the outgoing model, which scored the top rating of Good in all crash tests. Likewise, the 2021 Jetta received the highest marks of five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for overall safety.
